Mission Description

Mirandah Asia Epic Homes Build

This is a Private Build. Only Mirandah Asia volunteers are allowed to join this build.

EPIC HOME BUILD

EPIC Homes is EPIC's flagship initiative that aims to build trust and relationships with marginalized communities in order to create cooperative, resilient and sustainable communities through the simple act of building homes, addressing the issue of access to safe housing among marginalized communities.

EPIC strives to equip individuals to be able to engage with communities, build relationships and trust via participatory processes in research, planning & implementation with facilitation of socio-technical & domain experts. Through this, shared experiences are cultivated, which heighten the community, external supporters’ & our personal and shared awareness of our inter-relationships and interactions within the space we occupy.

   We have Built 130+ Homes

We have worked with over 10 villages across Peninsular Malaysia

We have a builder community of over 5000 volunteers

An EPIC Home only takes 3 - 5 days to build!

THE VOLUNTEERS
This is a privately organized build made possible by Mirandah Asia! This event is exclusively open to selected volunteers where an exciting weekend awaits them! Volunteers will be taking part in an exciting build and come together as a strong team to impact not just one family but an entire community!

VOLUNTEER LOGISTICS
Date: 19th to 21st April 2019
Location: Kampung Orang Asli Gurney, Ulu Yam, Batang Kali
Transportation: Volunteers will travel via bus
Accommodation: Leverage Hotel, Rawang

OUTCOME
We hope that throughout the build, volunteers will develop a deeper understanding of the how the Orang Asli live and that volunteers put themselves in the shoes of the community. In all that we’re doing for this trip, we are building a closer relationship with the Orang Asli and also strengthening the relationship and team dynamics amongst the volunteers as well.

ATTITUDE
Do talk to the family. Have a great conversation and leave a positive lasting impression! They are usually very shy, especially the women, and they may be a little hesitant to approach you in such a big group. Be friendly, strike up a conversation and have a great time! Always smile as emotions ripple out to the people around us! Be open to new things as different communities work in different ways and volunteers could even learn a thing or two!

  • The home build programme is one of the best opportunity for volunteers to give something back to the community i.e. building better shelter for an aboriginal family. The existing volunteers are very friendly and helpful. Personally, this programme taught me new skills - basic carpentry skills!
