Mission Description

Build a Tailor shop/Sewing Workshop Space for Dignity for Children

Mission:

“Dignity for Children Foundation is now launching SewXDignity – a tailoring shop that doubles as a sewing and design class. SewXDignity will be a creative space where students aged 15-18 years produce beautiful items made of donated and recycled cloth, while learning the basics of entrepreneurship. The space is open to over 1000 students in Dignity, and other members of the community to participate.

We invite you to partner with us in transforming lives.”

What you will be required to do:

From the beginning of September until mid October, we will be renovating a shoplot space in Sentul Boulevard (next to CutXDignity). Work required to be done by volunteers are basic construction work such as hammering nails onto recyled wood on walls, drilling screw onto cloth racks, building tables and relationships, setting up wooden shelves as storage space and many more. Experience with these will be welcomed but even if you have none, now is the time to start it!

We would like to include as many locals as possible, that’s you! Therefore, we’re opening up every weekend build for volunteering and you may choose to:

  1. commit to all weekends for maximum learning experience and impact

  2. Sign up for a weekend for those who have sardine packed schedules

What you need:

Your hands, your head, your heart and suitable clothing to package it all! Food will be provided and smiles will be free throughout the day.

Dignity for Children background:
Dignity for Children Foundation is a Kuala Lumpur based NGO that provides holistic quality education in order to empower children to break the cycle of poverty.
As part of our holistic education model, Dignity for Children Foundation has opened 2 Transformational Enterprises. It is a social enterprise aiming to transform youth’s lives through skills training and entrepreneurship. Professionals or long time industry people train and monitor the students.

In June 2015, we opened Project B, a café selling healthy and fresh food. Here, students learn to operate the back of house and engage customers/make coffee in the front of house.

In May 2017, we opened CutXDignity, a salon that doubles as a training ground for youth to learn the art of hairdressing and colouring.

These Transformational Enterprises are a place that is run by the youth for the community. Here, students gain a valuable set of skills and the platform to develop soft skills like trouble-shooting, communication, being resourceful, and handling money well. They are able to rediscover themselves, find out their passion and build character through meaningful real-world experiences.

Mission Impact

By helping us build this space for Dignity for Children, we’re not only showing support towards them and their students but we will be demonstrating to the students and teachers that we can collaborate for education, even if we’re not teachers! We will be moulding a better future for these children and demonstrating what it means to have the heart of service. Every nail you hammer, every screw you drive into the furniture, is helping to provide a better education for the underprivileged children.
