Mission Description

Build a Tailor shop/Sewing Workshop Space for Dignity for Children

What’s this about?

Dignity for Children Foundation is a Kuala Lumpur based NGO that provides holistic quality education in order to empower children to break the cycle of poverty, focusing on communities in Sentul. They have created two Transformation Entreprises that aim to transform youth’s lives through skills training and entrepreneurship. Their next Transformation Entreprise is called Sew X Dignity, a tailoring shop that doubles as a sewing and design class. This creative space will bring students aged 15-18 years together to produce beautiful items made of donated and recycled cloth, while learning the basics of entrepreneurship.

Where do we come in:

EPIC Communities will be organising this project, working with the builder hub to bring Seksan Design’s work to life. The back of Cut X Dignity is currently used as a woodworking workshop where students learn skills to make DIY projects and build small to medium sized furniture.

We will:

    • Retrofit the shophouse according to the designs to fit the sewing area,

    • An extension will be built for the workshop, at the back of Sew X Dignity,

    • Turn a small room into the manicure and pedicure room.

Where do you come in?

We’re looking for volunteers to come and help this community build this new space! From the beginning of September until mid October, we will be renovating the shoplot next to Cut X Dignity. Led by Specialists of the Builder Hub, you will take part in various DIY projects on site.

You may:

    • Engage in demolition! Take your frustrations out with a sledgehammer while being productive on site!

    • Build tables and workstations from scratch,

    • Create a feature wall using recycled wood and materials,

    • Put together unique light features made of bamboo, install shelving units.

What you need:

Your hands, your head, your heart and suitable clothing to package it all! Food will be provided and smiles will be free throughout the day.  We would like to include as many locals as possible, that’s you! Therefore, we’re opening up every weekend build for volunteering and you may choose to:

  1. Commit to all weekends for maximum learning experience and impact,

  2. Sign up for a weekend for those who have sardine packed schedules! We’ll start at around 9am and end at 5pm but this is subject to changes.

Please note that at minimum you must have Basic Builder Training to ensure minimal risk and basic tool knowledge.

Mission Impact

By helping us build this space for Dignity for Children, we’re not only showing support towards them and their students but we will be demonstrating to the students and teachers that we can collaborate for education, even if we’re not teachers! We will be molding a better future for these children and demonstrating what it means to have the heart of service. Every nail you hammer, every screw you drive into the furniture, is helping to provide a better education for the underprivileged children.
