Mission Description

A morning meeting with villagers to gather data and co-create solutions

What are Pathfinders?

Have you ever wanted to get a glimpse into the life of someone else? Through understanding someone's aspirations and struggles, we can best find ways to mutually support each other. Join us on our journey to better inform the world and its decisions to build a more co-operative and resilient future for all.

EPIC is recruiting Pathfinders - individuals who are looking to use their time and skills to communicate with everyday people on the ground, gathering important information to pave the way forward for communities to develop.

What's our purpose?

We want to give people the opportunity to explore a hidden part of Malaysia through the lenses of the Orang Asli families of Kampung Ulu Chemperoh. With the villagers' guidance, we’ll be seeking to understand their current living conditions together with a team of passionate volunteers.

The information gathered and relationships built will become a basis for us to work together with these families to support them in achieving a higher quality of life - on their terms. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy beautiful sceneries, explore a culture different to your own, and be part of an Epic community.

Who's eligible?

We welcome everybody to join us as a Pathfinder! Although there are some qualities that would help you become a supporter of this particular community:

  1. Communication and Language skills
(Bahasa Temuan or Malaysia for communicating with the local Orang Asli Temuan)
  2. Humility, open mind & heart
  3. A genuine passion for helping people
  4. A sincere interest in people’s stories
  5. A love for adventure and the unknown

Prior experience is not required. We’ll equip you with the necessary skills with a training session on Friday, 21st of September, a couple of days before you head out to the village to apply them on the Sunday, 23rd of September. The journeys we embark on are often made worthwhile by the people we take them with, so grab a friend or two and join us for a weekend of learning, experience and fun.

What will we be doing?

A morning-long engagement in an Orang Asli village where you’ll be meeting the villagers - people with their own unique cultures and aspirations. Their way of life often comes to a shock for most city folk, but as we dive deeper into their culture we’ll discover that we have so much to learn from them.

Prior to actually going to the village, we will be having a casual get-together (training session) where we'll conduct basic cultural training about Orang Asli culture, and hands-on technical skills related to community & home assessment which will be very important in ensuring the information we gather can be put to good use.

Last but not least, expect a fulfilling experience of meeting new people and learning how to work together to do something EPIC for your community.

1. Create deeper ties between rural orang asli and city people

2. Clear information that would help articulate the village conditions so that greater appreciation towards their resilience could be cultivated but at the same time help attract the right support required

  • Again, a unique experience with EPIC. Different Orang Asli villages have different needs, and this extends to different families as well.
It is an interesting and great learning experience for 'us' urbanites meeting the lesser known Malaysians living here in the Peninsula.

  • Overall a great first experience for me meeting with the Orang Asli community and getting to know them and systematically recording the issues that they may have that we could address. I will definitely be up for the next Pathfinders. With that being said, this experience wasn't a walk in the park. Participants were basically given a stack of forms, some basic instructions and split in pairs and sent off with each family. It's up to you to find what works best in your pair to get the most useful information under a limited period of time. Met lots of interesting and nice participants too! :)

  • A wonderful experience overall. I have never been to an orang asli village and this was an eye opener for me. Looking forward for future mission of similar nature. Would like to join your builder pathways as well. Thank you daniel and sasha for the leadership.
