Mission Description

Build 2 New Designs (Semi Urban & Rural) during KLAF2019

Please sign up if you are available to build at least 3 days between 17th - 24th June and dismantle from the 29th - 30th June 2019.

Training will be provided on site (8am, 17th June) for those who have not attended build training.

We believe that the power of choice has the ability to restore dignity in people, this includes having more suitable options when it comes to affordable housing. Many marginalised communities in Malaysia are not afforded many choices when it comes to setting a base for a home, often times taking the very few options that have been decided for them. Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) is collaborating with Epic Homes in this year's Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival (KLAF19) in attempts to address this. 


Since December 2018, KLAF19 hosted an International Design Competition titled Tropical House for Orang Asli which received 318 registrants and 244 competition submissions from around the world. The intention of this competition is to explore housing possibilities and increase the existing selection of designs for Orang Asli communities. Some these solutions will then be presented and tweaked along with the various Orang Asli communities which Epic and their partners work with to ensure the suitability of the home designs, material choices and construction methodology. These designs will be continuously documented and catalogued, allowing for a growing selection of design and housing options for different Orang Asli communities all around Malaysia. 

There are two sections to this design competition, one with a rural context and one with a semi-urban context. A section of the winning design for both the categories will be built at and during KLAF19. The houses will then be dismantled and rebuilt for a suitable Orang Asli family or community. The identity and design of the winners are still P&C.

Time - 8am to 6pm

    On a personal note, I return as a builder to overcome my fear of heights and loud machinery. It is a very empowering experience when you forge through them and along the way learned something new. It is also very refreshing to meet builders across all ages and the oldest volunteer, Mr Hon made me feel hopeful and eager to reach my golden years and still be very active in community service! Also, can't wait to see these design prototypes put to good use in future builds!
