Mission Description

Sponsored by Cyclist Wardrobe

Epic Homes is Epic's flagship initiative that aims to build trust and relationships with marginalized communities in order to create cooperative, resilient and sustainable communities through the simple act of building home - addressing the issue of access to safe housing among marginalized communities.

Epic strives to equip individuals to be able to engage with communities, build trust and relationships via participatory processes in research, planning & implementation with the facilitation of socio-technical & domain experts. Through this, shared experiences are cultivated, which heightens the community, external supporters & overall awareness of our inter-relationships and interactions within the space we occupy.

  We have Built 170+ Homes.

We have a builder community of over 5,000 volunteers.

We have worked with over 10 villages across Peninsular Malaysia.

An EPIC Home only takes 3 - 5 days to build!

Join the Sunday, 25th September, 2022 Basic Builder Workshop here!

Please note that volunteers who are participating in Epic Homes Build Programme must be at the age of 18 and above.**

We hope that throughout the build, volunteers will develop a deeper understanding of how the Orang Asli live and that volunteers put themselves in the shoes of the community. We're essentially building a closer relationship with the Orang Asli community whilst also strengthening the relationships and dynamics of your team!

Approach and talk to the family! Strike up a conversation and leave a positive and lasting impression. They are usually shy, especially the women, and they may be a little hesitant to approach you in such a big group.
Be open to new things as different communities tend to work differently. Who knows? You could even learn a thing or two!

  • It shocks me deeply when the recipient of the house, Mr. Abbas and family shared with me the RM 5 window is consider an expensive and luxury piece of item to them. Before the build they have decided to hire an external carpenter to specially build the windows for their new house, due to better material, and the cost is RM 5 which is expensive to them, and for us, RM 5 is merly nothing. I could never imagine after the build, how much does the whole house mean to them. Perhaps I could imagine us the joy of a sudden won of lottery worth millions; on them perhaps is a grateful life changing and saving situation where they finally can get rid of the insects and bad weather for their soon to be born baby.

It was my first to participate in a mission to do such meaningful activities to a fellow human being and his family, and to participate together with 41 like minded souls, the feeling is just beyond special. The atmosphere is very positive and no space for critism of each other work, and that is because every one of us has a single goal in mind which is to complete building a new home in 3 days for Mr. Abbas and his family.

There are a mixture of new and returning builders, mixture of people from different background and races. Returning builders are well aware of what they came here for; for new builders, you can clearly see their transformation bit by bit everyday, from amateurs in using different kind of tools to self-claimed specialist in their responsibility area, from individuals that always wait for next instructions to independent problem solvers to ensure quality in place :-) The entire process is a joy in life, a kind of joy where I almost forgot about it since I entered the materialistic world.

Thank you Epic Home for this fantastic and perhaps a life changing experience for me, I would certainly recommend it to more friends, and of course I will always be back to enjoy my vacation with a mission in mind!
