Mission Description

A morning meeting with villagers to gather data and co-create solutions

What are Pathfinders?

EPIC is recruiting Pathfinders - individuals who are looking to use their time and skills to communicate with everyday people on the ground, gathering important information to pave the way forward for communities to develop.

Through understanding someone's aspirations and struggles, we can best find ways to mutually support each other. Join us on our journey to better inform the world and its decisions to build a more co-operative and resilient future for all.

What's our purpose?

We want to give people the opportunity to explore a hidden part of Malaysia through the lenses of the Orang Asli families of Kampung Putra. With the villagers' guidance, we’ll be seeking to understand their current living conditions together with a team of passionate volunteers.

The information gathered and relationships built will become a basis for us to work together with these families to support them in achieving a higher quality of life - on their terms. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy beautiful sceneries, explore a culture different to your own, meet new people, and be part of an Epic community.

*NOTE: This will be our second visit to Kampung Putra to meet the families! Help us finish the final push before we move on to the next steps in working with the community.

Who's eligible?

We welcome everybody to join us as a Pathfinder! Although there are some qualities that would help you become a supporter of this particular community:

  1. Must have attended a Pathfinders workshop
  2. Communication and Language skills (Bahasa Temuan or Bahasa Malaysia for communicating with the local Orang Asli Temuan)
  3. Humility, open mind & heart
  4. A genuine passion for helping people
  5. A sincere interest in people’s stories
  6. A love for adventure and the unknown

Prior experience is not required. We’ll equip you with the necessary skills through a workshop on Friday, 8th of March, a day before you head out to the village to apply them on the Saturday, 9th of March. The journeys we embark on are often made worthwhile by the people we take them with, so grab a friend or two and join us for a weekend of learning, experience and fun.

What will we be doing?

A morning-long engagement in an Orang Asli village where you’ll be meeting the villagers - people with their own unique cultures and aspirations. Their way of life often comes to a shock for most city folk, but as we dive deeper into their culture we’ll discover that we have so much to learn from them.

Prior to actually going to the village, we will be having a casual get-together (training session) where we'll conduct basic cultural training about Orang Asli culture, and hands-on technical skills related to data collection & household assessment using EPIC’s tools and methods. We will be conducting discussions and activities related to cultural humility, communication & listening, critical thinking, and development, just to name a few.

This mission is a follow up to Mission PF#3 conducted earlier last year.
