Mission Description

Laying out 8km pipes from water source in Lata Huup to village Water Tanks

What's Happening?

Hulu Tamu Villagers are building their own gravity feed water system by piping water from Lata Huup in Sg Pagah, 8km away and 130m higher than the village.

Planning begun with EPIC Communities's facilitation and Engineers Without Borders Malaysia's consultation in January 2018, and four 500GL water tanks have already been prepared with a shelter in the village since August 2018. They have been taking 1 month since then to trace and clear up the heavily forested pipe route from these tanks to the water source.

Now that the route is almost ready, they are requesting assistance in helping them to transport and lay the heavy poly pipes along this route.

Who's Eligible?

Anyone with:

  • A heart of service
  • Dedication for 10 hours (8am - 6pm) on Saturday, September 16th, 2018. This build is expected to be held every week until completion (October or later). Participants are encouraged, but not obliged to attend for more than 1 day. Separate mission page will be made for build day. You can choose to stay overnight in any of the nearby lodge at your own expenses. (If you make good friends with the villagers, you might be invited to stay with them!)
  • Appreciation of hiking through hilly forest
  • Resilience in carrying of heavy pipes! (don't worry, we won't be hiking all the 8km route in one day, and the pipes will be transported and laid in small segments, according to the capacity of the participants)
  • Humility to listen to advice and instructions, either from the villagers, EPIC representatives, or fellow team-mates (This is a Forest Reserve and Orang Asli Customary Territory that is not part of tourist hiking track. Straying away or disobeying certain cultural customs/pantang can be very dangerous) Briefing Sessions will be held before and after each build day.
  • Water, snacks, and packed lunch to survive
  • Covered hiking attire (Hiking shoes, long pants, t-shirt) to protect from thorny plants, bugs & leeches!

Who's Organising?

Hulu Tamu villagers is partnering with EPIC Communities in studying, planning, mobilising and executing this project since 2016, with technical consultation of Engineers Without Borders Malaysia. This Project Brief gives more details about the background of the project.

EPIC have been working with the villagers since 2010, through building 33 EPIC Homes and 29 toilets.

  • It was so exhausting! The pipes we heavy and long. The first time I carry the pipe uphill, I thought Im going to die from tiredness. However, the experience i gained was golden! The villagers were friendly and helpful, they stopped whenever i felt tired. The post-carrying moment is the best because the villagers took us to a majestic waterfall twice! All in all, being a city boy, I learnt a lot from this experience and I will totally recommend it to my friends!
