Assisting Hulu Tamu villagers to repaint their homes

What's Happening?
We have been working with the community in Kg Hulu Tamu since 2010, to rebuild homes with the families who are in need under the EPIC Homes mission. There are a total of 33 EPIC Homes built in the village. 

That was just the start of a long process of relationship-building and co-development with the villagers. The 2nd major project together with the community was to build toilets in almost the whole year of 2017.

The earlier Epic Homes have began to deteriorate due to weathering, design & construction defects and inadequate capacity for maintenance. We are committed to support the families not just in built environment improvement, but also in building their capacity to sustain the houses in terms of knowledge, community organisation and material resources.

On the 24th of Nov, they are seeking assistance to help with repainting the walls and steel structures of their homes. 

Why Are We Doing This?
As part of our preparation to scale, we decided to do an audit of the many homes that we’ve built over the years across Selangor, Perak, and Kelantan. The results as a whole were mixed with encouraging results where many proud owners who’ve further beautified and customised their homes. However, we had also noticed that many homes that were built in our formative years were in bad condition. READ ALL ABOUT IT HERE.


Who's Eligible?
Anyone with:

• A heart of service
• Dedication for 9 hours (8.30am - 5.30pm) on Sunday, 24th Nov 2019 
• Appreciation of being outdoors 
• Resilience in carrying out physical work (mixing cement, moving heavy items)
• Humility to listen to advice and instructions, either from the villagers, EPIC representatives, or fellow team-mates (This is a Orang Asli Customary Territory that is not part of tourist hiking track. Straying away or disobeying certain cultural customs/pantang can be very dangerous) Briefing Sessions will be held before and after the build works
• Water, snacks, and packed lunch to survive
• Covered outdoors attire (Shoes with good grip, long pants, t-shirt) to protect from minor cuts.

Who's Organising?

Hulu Tamu villagers is partnering with EPIC Communities in studying, planning, mobilising and executing this project since 2018.
