THE BASIC BUILDER WORKSHOP

Building an EPIC Home for the first time? Before joining a build, you must first join a Basic Builder Workshop. There, you’ll learn the basic skills and safety training needed to build an EPIC Home!

How do I sign up for the Basic Builder Workshop?
After purchasing your ticket for this build, you will be emailed an access code which you can use to sign up for the Basic Builder Workshop.

View upcoming Basic Builder Workshops on our mission page.

Returning Builders who have joined a Basic Builder Workshop before do not need to join it again - see you at the build!

THE OUTCOME
We hope that throughout the build, volunteers will develop a deeper understanding of how the Orang Asli live, and that volunteers put themselves in the shoes of the community. We're essentially building a closer relationship with the Orang Asli community whilst also strengthening the relationships and dynamics of your team!
THE ATTITUDE
Approach and talk to the family! Strike up a conversation and leave a positive and lasting impression. They are usually shy, especially the women, and they may be a little hesitant to approach you in such a big group.
Be open to new things as different communities tend to work differently. Who knows? You could even learn a thing or two!

THE SPONSORS

EPIC Homes is EPIC's flagship initiative that aims to build trust and relationships with marginalized communities in order to create cooperative, resilient and sustainable communities through the simple act of building home - addressing the issue of access to safe housing among marginalized communities.

EPIC strives to equip individuals to be able to engage with communities, build trust and relationships via participatory processes in research, planning & implementation with the facilitation of socio-technical & domain experts. Through this, shared experiences are cultivated, which heightens the community, external supporters & overall awareness of our inter-relationships and interactions within the space we occupy.

  We have Built 200+ Homes.

We have a builder community of over 5,000 volunteers.

We have worked with over 10 villages across Peninsular Malaysia.

An EPIC Home only takes 3 - 5 days to build!

  • Coming back for builds has always been something I look forward to. Every build is different; there is always something new to learn, meeting friends made from previous builds and new people to meet.

One feedback I have for the Epic management is to allow flexibility for working individuals when we have work commitments. A few days prior to the build, I had asked to come in later on Day 1 due to a certain work commitment. However Epic management’s decision was that: I must come to the build on time or change my build date within 3 months from the original build date.

Understandbly, there is a good reason why we must be on time and the trust Epic has given us builders should not be abused when it comes to timeliness and punctuality. Builders who return generally want to continue to show up to contribute, and Epic management needs to know not all work commitments are easy to adjust even though we are taking one day of annual leave from our bosses at work. Perhaps consider making the decision based the individual’s past record instead of issuing a blanket ultimatum that may deter future builders from coming back.

Despite this, the experience I’ve had in all my builds have been great. Thank you Epic for giving the opportunity and platform to help the Orang Asli community. Core team: Ping Zhi, Yvonne, Ted, Jeff and Latiffah you guys are fantastic and took great care of us! Everyone from EX20 were wonderful, and it’s been a privilege to spend time with all of you ❤️
